One to One - Durham City

Just got back from a great one to one day in the picturesque city of Durham. The weather was superb which added to the day and many thanks to Harry who was great to teach and eager to learn. Harry is retired and is interested in taking up photography again but is new to the digital SLR world. His son has kindly bought him a Canon 40D which coincidentally was my first SLR and is a camera I would highly recommend. The day started in a local coffee shop to have a chat what Harry would like to get out of the day and what type of photographs he enjoys taking. Harry had been mainly using the camera in the Automatic modes with mixed results which is usually the case with camera's. When you have your camera set to the automatic modes such as Automatic, Portrait, Landscape, Macro etc your camera is making a lot of decisions for you hence the term automatic! What  we set out to do for the day was to get off the automatic modes and start to using the creative modes of the camera to take full control over the shot you take. What we used for the day was aperture priority mode which is a great place to start when wanting to take more control over your photographs. By the end of the day Harry understood depth of field, the relationship between aperture and shutter speed, where to focus and how to choose your focus point using manual and automatic focus as well as a greater understanding of his Canon 40D and it's many functions. Durham is a wonderful place for taking photographs, a captivating city with winding cobbled streets and a prominent peninsula crowned with the dramatic Cathedral and Castle World Heritage Site. Durham is a pleasure to explore and one of the finest city's for taking photographs. Just don't take my word for it check out the shot below which was taken today with Harry.
